Ruth was a leader on the field. He led by his bat, pitching ability, and his great fielding. Additionally, he was known as a tough force in the dug out. He was a strong personality and he stood up to people. One teammate once said of Ruth, "I saw a man transformed from a human being into something pretty close to a god." Babe Ruth's life began in Baltimore, Maryland on February 6, 1895. Ruth admitted himself that he was a "bad Kid," who "had no sense of right or wrong." He caused trouble for his parents every day. Because of this, George Herman Ruth's parents were forced to send him to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys. It was at this school that Brother Matthias took special interest in Ruth. Brother Matthias taught Ruth discipline, how to remain focused, and how hard work would pay off by playing baseball. This is where Ruth developed his leadership skills that he took to the major leagues. On July 11, 1914, Babe Ruth was purchased by the Red Sox. His teammates didn't know what to think of Babe Ruth. Ruth took batting practice, which most pitchers did not do. If a veteran complained about Ruth, he stood his ground and never relented. His strength showed and he did not get intimidated easily. This was a major reason he had the respect of his players on the field. Babe Ruth also practiced more than anyone on the Red Sox. he had started pitching and excelled at it. It he wasn't pitching then he was taking batting practice. It was because of this that on September 5, 1914, not only did Babe Ruth pitch a shut out, he also hit his first home run. This had never happened before. Ruth was starting to secure his place as one of the team's best pitchers and hitters. On May 6, 1914, he really cemented himself as a all-around great player. Ruth was playing against the Yankees at the {Polo Grounds. It was more common to hit an inside-the-park home run than over the fence. But Ruth did just that. He hit a towering homer over the fence that the New York newspapers called the "mighty homer." By this time, all of his teammates were impressed by Ruth. His work ethic had really paid off for him, and he gained the respect of everyone who played with him. Growing up poor and unsure of himself, the player's confidence in Ruth started to give him more confidence in himself. This confidence led Ruth to wanting more money with the Red Sox which did not go over well. In 1919, George Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees. Many of the players and sports writers in Boston were angry that Ruth was sold. He had built such a solid reputation in the club house of Boston and on the field, that people did not want to see their best player leave. This created bad blood for years to come. Immediately after Ruth was traded to the Yankees they started doing very well. They won the pennant in the following years 1922, 1923, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1932 until Ruth decided to retire. The Yankees were the best team in Major League baseball because of the great Babe Ruth. Because of being such a great player and a great leader that people gave him nicknames such as "Sultan of Swat", "King of Crash", "The Great Bambino", and "The Titan of Terror". He was truly a leader on the baseball field.
