A Leader off the Field
Ruth was not only a leader on the field but he also was a leader off of the field. Ruth was young, out of control boy who did not listen to his parents. He got into so much trouble on the streets of Baltimore that the courts ordered him to attend boarding catholic school called Saint Mary's. At this school, Ruth met a brother named Brother Matthias. Brother Matthias took a liking to Babe Ruth and worked with him in all aspects of his life. Brother Matthias was firm but gentle and patient. Slowly, George began to respond to the attention, and for the first time in his life, Ruth began to work really hard in school and in life. The positive and encouraging words from Brother Matthias made George feel proud. This was the start of Babe Ruth realizing how much kids need positive attention in their lives to be successful.
Because of Brother Matthias, Babe Ruth had a real interest in kids and making them feel special. Ruth often visited orphanages to spend time with all of the children. He associated himself with those children never denied signing autographs for any child. He also visited hospitals often. Ruth felt the need to make sick kids feel special, and in general, it was important to Babe that kids knew that he cared about them. In addition to that, Babe was very generous,too. He rarely denied requests for donations for charities. Babe Ruth made a lot of money, but he also donated a lot of money. Many charities praised Babe Ruth for his generosity.
Additionally, Ruth also remembered his friends. Babe Ruth always remembered Brother Matthias and St. Mary's. When Ruth found out that Brother Matthias' car was totaled in a car wreck, he bought him a new one. At one point, St. Mary's burned down in 1919. It was Babe Ruth who came up with a plan to save the church. His plan was a total success and Ruth saved the church and the school. Ruth is a very generous person off the field who often thought of others first and not himself. Babe Ruth was truly a leader off the baseball field.
